The American Heart Association (AHA) is a non-profit organization in the United States that fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke. It is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke." The American Heart Association publishes a standard for providing basic and advanced life support, including standards for proper performance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Most widely accepted certification for basic life support (BLS). The AHA is now also a provider of training for first aid, in addition to CPR. Ralph L. Sacco, MD, MS, FAAN, FAHA, is the current President of the American Heart Association. He is the first neurologist to hold the position. The AHA also operates an affiliated organization, the American Stroke Association, which focuses on care, research and prevention of strokes. In 1994, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, an industry publication, released the results of the largest study of charitable and non-profit organization popularity and credibility conducted by Nye Lavalle & Associates. The study showed that the American Heart Association was ranked as the 5th "most popular charity/non-profit in America" of over 100 charities researched with 45% of Americans over the age of 12 choosing Love and Like A lot for the American Heart Association. On November 30, 2009, The American Heart Association announced a new cardiac arrest awareness campaign called Be the Beat. The campaign’s aim is to help create the next generation of lifesavers by teaching 12- to 15-year-olds fun ways to learn the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and how to use an automated external defibrillator. The official site, BetheBeat.heart.org, contains interactive games, quizzes, and a playlist of 100-beat-per-minute songs, as well as a section for teachers and administrators who want to incorporate CPR and AED educational information into their schools. In May 2010, the AHA endorsed the Nintendo Wii Console to encourage everyone to get involved in a level of fitness that would develop healthiness. The AHA Heart Icon is featured on the box of the console as well as on the Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort titles. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Which CPR classes are better, the ones from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association? Q. I'm a nursing student and I need CPR certification. I don't know which classes are better, the ones from the Red Cross or the ones from the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association seems to be cheaper, but I don't know if they provide the textbooks or if you have to buy them, b/c it says it's only $35.00, and the red cross classes are like $60.00. I would appreciate your help in this regard. thanks! Asked by shiny_star88bb - Thu Jan 14 16:34:03 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It all depends on the area or potential employer. The big 3 AHA, American Red Cross and the American Safety and Health Institute all use the same set of standards which are developed jointly. The standards are set by the ECC or Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee. On this committee all 3 organizations are represented. But to answer your question, in general AHA is the most widely recognized and accepted by Health care facilities. Answered by Jason - Wed Jan 20 12:34:00 2010 Should I have my friends & family donate money to The American Heart Association or Autism Speaks for my bday? Q. Instead of asking for gifts, I'm asking my friends and family to donate to a charity for my birthday. Which one should I choose and why? My reasons for narrowing the charities down to these two: My father died of a heart attack and my brother has (non-severe) autism. Asked by Rachel - Tue Nov 25 17:35:06 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You don't need to choose. Let them know either one is a great present for you. My pet charity is Make-A-Wish Foundation. Q. I don't know which classes to take. I'm getting confused by all these titles AED, Family and Friends, etc etc. I just need something very basic since I will be working with most children and other certified adults. I supposed I should sign up for the HeartSaver CPR and First Aid courses, correct? Asked by III - Sun May 11 01:05:41 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Heartsaver CPR and First Aid will be sufficient. AED is a defibrillator (it is a good idea to learn how to work an AED if the school you work in has one- if not, there really isnt a point.) Most CPR classes will bring out a defibrillator and briefly show you how to work it but you will not really learn how to use it unless you take a special course. Each course is between 2-4 hours.
