Has anyone tried the organic/ non-organic food detector made of coiled copper?
Q. I found it in an organic store and the sales agent said that if you put it over food and it turns clockwise then it's organic. Counter clockwise then it's non-organic. Is this true?

A. Wow, the things people come up with to separate people from their money. It's a complete scam and I would wonder about a store that carries such items. Either the owners do not understand what organic foods are or they are into ripping off their customers by selling such useless and likely expensive items. Either way I would find another health food store that is honest and knowledgeable

How do you start an Organic Diet?
Q. I've read that for some health conditions I have it would help if I started an organic diet. I know Whole Foods has organic food, but I'm not sure how to start this. Do you do it gradually? Are there organic versions of all kinds of foods? Is it really easier on your liver? Do you have to cook everything from scratch? Are there any organic food restaurants in Chicago? Has anyone switched over and have advice for a newbie?

A. Many grocery stores carry organic food. Most fruits and vegetables come in organic versions. You might want to look at farmers markets in your area - you can get fresh local produce at a better price. One rule of thumb - fresher the better. Second rule of thumb - the longer the produce has traveled, less likely it will be fresh! I do not know if they are better for the liver. I know that organic food does not carry pesticide residues. It is also fresher, and tastes better. It is better for the environment. It depends on what you mean by scratch. You can get many organic things frozen or even canned. But in general, the more "real" the food is, less additives in there. Generally stick to eating real food rather than synthetic food. … [cont.]

Why is there an organic layer in my tea?
Q. I've noticed lately that when I'm drinking tea it often has a thin organic layer resting at the top. Does anyone know of any components in tea (black tea) that would produce that? I've checked for possible contaminants, but everything seems pretty clean. I drew it off the top once, and it does indeed mix with other non-polar solvents, so its likely organic. Just thought maybe some of you organic chemistry wizards might have some insight on what it could be.

A. Likely just an oily type compounds from the actual tea leaves themselves. Much like the layer you see on soups with meat or chicken. Difference is simply plant oil versus meat oils (a.k.a. fat).

Organic ways to get rid of spider mites on tomato plants ??
Q. My tomatoes are doing great but a spider mite infestation has developed. I like to keep things organic and I'm having trouble getting information on ways to deter spider mites on tomatoes. I've heard that diatomaceous earth or salt water work through severe dehydration of the insects, will this also cause the tomatoes to shrivel and dehydrate? Does garlic water work well against spider mites?

A. Using Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth, mix in spray bottle with some water, spray your plant, when the powder is dry on the plant when the mites come in contact with it, it cuts them and that is how the dehydrate. Your plant will be perfectly fine problem solved. Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth is one of the worlds best kept secrets. I give it to my dog as well as my son and myself and have nothing but good things to say about it. I don't know about Garlic water and Salt Water and plants just don't go together. DE is the way to go! You can find at www.freshwaterorganics.co m they call it food grage DE or Fossil Shell Flour.

Q. I'm not a strict vegetarian or health conscious person. The difference is that organic producers are taking care of their land and working it to get the last possible perfect strawberry possible. They're not using mass-produced pesticides and fertilizers that upset the natural balance of flora and fauna. As a result, they aren't poisoning the land they grow food on. This means they produce less, so they do have to price their products higher. Yes, there are natural pesticidal compounds in organically grown food. What are the benifits of eating all organic food?
Q. I know that a lot of people are turning to all organic diets. Is organic food really more nutritious than normal food? Why is non organic food bad for you? Do YOU follow an all organic diet? Why or why not? Thanks.

A. One of the huge advantages of organic foods is that they haven't been doused in pesticides. Organic foods can be more nutritious, richer in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids than non-organic. Genetically modified GM food isn't used in organic products. none of the additives lurking in processed and fast food are permitted in organic foods. the flavour is just so much better. Non organic food is not bad for you but its just not as healthy as non organic. Although I dont follow an all organic diet( mainly because the price difference) I do give my daughter all organic simply because she is just a baby.

What are the most important organic baby items to buy?
Q. I am about to have my first baby and I think I might be becoming one of those paranoid new moms who reads into everything she hears. I need to use cloth diapers to avoid dioxin, an organic mattress to avoid flame retardant chemicals, etc. Does anyone know what the most important items for the baby are that need to be organic? I do not have the sort of budget that will allow me to go 100% organic. Any suggestions?

A. Definitely food. Breastfeed and buy organic baby food and baby cereal. Also, try to buy, not necessarily organic, but hypoallergenic laundry detergent, like Dreft. Oh, and another things would be allergy free soaps and shampoos.

A. So - the Body Shop is NOT organic. I would recommend this new up and coming cream. They are sold at Whole Foods body shop - which have strict organic requirements. Instead of buying them from Whole Foods, I have found them a lot cheaper on the website. Its call made from earth and I will give you the link below. .. Its good because it has no chemicals and it helps your skin repair itself naturally - so you dont need to use the cream forever. . .it really does add to your skins ability to naturally moisturize. .. they have 3 different Signature series face creams. I would definitely recommend the 3 Berry Face Serum. It has blueberry and raspberry in the lotion, which are packed in Anti-oxidants. Definitely try it!!

What's the difference between inorganic and organic solvents?
Q. 1. My chemistry textbook talks all about inorganic and organic solvents, but they don't explain WHAT they are exactly. 2. Do they have different solubility characteristics? A. 1. Organic solvents always contain the element carbon. Inorganic solvents don't contain the element carbon. The most common solvent, water, is an example of an inorganic solvent. There are many more organic solvents than inorganic solvents. 2. Using the adage "like dissolves like" is helpful in determining solubility characteristics of a compound in a given solvent. For example, paraffin wax would dissolve in a hydrocarbon solvent such as cyclohexane, because they are both hydrocarbons. Paraffin wax would not dissove in a polar solvent such as water. 3. Depends on the polarity of the compound to be dissolved and the polartiy of the organic solvent. For example, the polar organic compound benzoic acid has much more solubility in… [cont.]

Does anyone know of any completely organic shampoo's and styling products that are available?
Q. I am interested in getting some shampoo which is completely organic, and totally chemical free! It cannot contain parabens or phlates, and has to contain natural ingredients like plant extracts etc. I've seen some I like by The Organic Pharmacy but it is 20, and that is a bit expensive for me, can anyone suggest another organic brand that is good but retails at a reasonable price? It would also be helpful if they had styling products in the same range, like serum and straightening balm if possible. Many thanks!

Is there really a difference from organic and non-organic fruits and veggies?
Q. I recently started a raw vegan diet and I am reading that because of all the pesticides in normal grocery shop veggies and fruits, I should purchase organic. The problem is, there is not near store that sells organic food, and I don't have a car. I certainly don't think I'll be able to walk/bus for 3 hours every few days. But if my health counts on it, I suppose I must. Some input please?

What foods are most important to buy organic?
Q. I know that there's not a big difference between non-organic and organic bananas and avocados, as far as the amount of pesticides and carcinogens stored in the food. However, strawberries and milk have a lot of pesticides, hormones, and all kinds of junk. Which foods contain the most "junk" when they're not organic?
Asked by truth is... - Sat Jan 5 17:29:27 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Buying organic has a lot more advantages than just to the consumer eating it. It produces less waste and protects the environment by keeping water cleaner because of the the way they are grown. The more delicate the produce is, the better to purchase the organic version. So lettuces, herbs, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, scallions and mushrooms are top on my list. The organic versions are more expensive to buy, so pick things that you would normally not be able to eat without washing well or are going to cook in preparation.

The organic versions are more expensive to buy, so pick things that you would normally not be able to eat without washing well or are going to cook in preparation.

How come Organic foods are so expensive?
Q. I dont understand why an organic apple is almost twice the price of a regular apple. I would figure that without the use of expensive pesticides and/or hormones added to these natural foods, the price savings would be forwarded to the customer. Personally this is a huge marketing ploy and these farmers are getting paid.

A. Price savings are not always forwarded to the customer. Sometimes profits are needed to offset a bad year where bad weather reduced the crop yield, or more money is needed to invest in seeds for future crops. There are many ways of managing the money. For the original question - organic foods are generally more expensive because they have to be grown a certain way to be organic. They are labor intensive and greater care is required. There must be eternal vigilance when it comes to insects and molds. Natural or non-chemical pest controls must be established. These things don't happen by accident or second rate farming methods. The farmer has to be competent and know what he is doing. It is not easy to produce organic foods, so I think… [cont.]

What does organic and free range mean for my milk and egg products?
Q. I was wondering, because I know some cows are milked by uncomfortable machines daily and some egg laying chickens live cramped lives. Do organic and free range mean they're treated humanely and have a comfortable, happy life? Also, if I owned my own chickens and cows, would I be able to obtain milk and eggs from them without making them uncomfortable? Intelligent answers only, please. Don't be rude.

A. "Also, if I owned my own chickens and cows, would I be able to obtain milk and eggs from them without making them uncomfortable?" YES!!! Make a chicken coop, chickens are a joy to have! I love mine, I have silkies, barred rocks, buff orpingtons, and a few mixes that all lay extremely well. They don't mind you taking their eggs unless one of them has a clutch and are sitting on them. Then just wear a glove if they start to get mad. My dad also raises angus cows for meat which really sucks because they are really sweet. I have a cow named princess which is my "pet" and she is awesome. Cows are pretty easy to maintain, you just kinda stick them in a pasture and let them do their own thing and milking them does not hurt them at all, once… [cont.]

What is organic shampoo and how is it different from regular shampoo?
Q. Is organic shampoo healthier for your hair? And where can I buy it?
Asked by CC - Tue Nov 24 21:40:30 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Legitimately organic shampoo is made of ingredients that are not chemically altered and come from plants grown without pesticides. Soaps called "sulfates" are present in most non-organic shampoos. Though they are generally derived from coconuts, sulfates are not natural in the sense that they are created through processes of chemical extraction. They are generally (after water) the main ingredient in mainstream shampoos and can damage your hair with frequent usage. Avoid Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and worst of all avoid Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate. Organic shampoos should not include sulfates and therefore are much gentler on hair and skin. I hope that helps!
