Can a healthy diet lower your immunities or immune system?
Q. Around november of last year, i switched over from a disgusting junk food thriving, soda drinking, chain smoking living habit to a cleaner more exercise and healthy eating habit. Before i switched, i got sick maybe once a year. Ever since i changed things, I've caught several colds, and a very mild case of strep. Basically what i'm asking is can a healthier diet put you at risk for sickness or common viruses?

A. A food plan that is easy to follow without any expensive things to buy. A food plan that lets me feel satified with every meal and not still starving. A food plan that allows me the freedom to choose what I want to eat - within reason. A food plan that doesn't cut out one or more food groups. A food plan that gives good results on the scales and in inches. A food plan that doesn't make me tired and leaves me with no energy and headaches. A food plan that lets you have a little treat every now and again without you putting 2Lbs back on. A food plan that feels like a food plan and not a DIET. I think that is all I could really ask for. Hope this helps. Bon

What is the least amount of fat you can eat in a healthy diet?
Q. I know your body needs some fats, but a lower fat diet is certainly healthiest. What is a low fat diet? I mean, going completely fat free is unhealthy, but eating 65 grams of fat (recommended for a 2,000 calorie diet) is not necessary. Can I be healthy just getting the fats from healthy foods like breads and oatmeal? Sorry for all of the questions- I could just brainstorm on this topic.

A. Too often, this question is inaccurately answered. Weight loss guru's tend to tout what they see as problems with fat intake, and many people who think they are cardiologists speak up with false information. There is a lot more to proper nutrition than total calories or someone's errorenous ideas about "max fat grams." For example, you have to consume fat with carbohydrates in order to metabolize the carbs. Fat in the diet is necessary for absorption of fat soluable vitamins. There are many facts to consider. Here is a question presented to a nutritionist on this topic: question: I eat a balanced diet except I concentrate on the fat content. If it's available in non-fat such as milk or cheese, that's what I buy and eat. My fat… [cont.]

Is a healthy diet more important when you are young or when you are old?
Q. Are there any reliable studies on this issue? On the one hand, I can see how a healthy diet when you are young might set in motion some long term positvie health benefits. On the other hand, it may be the case that children's bodies are so efficient at squeezing the nutrition out of the foods that they eat that a child's poor diet may not have the detrimental effects that an older person's poor diet would. My 8 year old son's diet is very limited, yet surprisingly, at least to me, he acts and looks very physically healthy.
Asked by marc - Sat Aug 18 12:16:09 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Both - it's important at every stage of your life. When you're young and your body is still growing, it's very important to have all the right nutrients for building bones, teeth, muscles, organs, etc., as well as providing energy. It's true also that reinforcing healthy food choices for a child will set a pattern which he will probably follow throughout his life, and this is further protection for his health. Recent studies are showing more and more how important good nutrition is as we're aging, though. Some conditions thought to be unavoidable or irreversible as a result of aging have responded well to a healthy diet. Conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes have shown greatly reduced symptoms in studies… [cont.]

A. Get her on Overweight Management (OM) cat food by Purina, and only feed her a set amount per day. You need to feed your cat in "meals" to control their weight and eating. Maybe once in the morning give her, say, 35 grams of OM cat food, and maybe 45 grams at night.

A. depending on age, i would not worry too much about calorie intake. if there is a low calorie option, you can have it, but quantity is really the issue. don't think drinking a diet soda will help. if you want a soda, just drink the real thing because there isn't much of a difference (unless you're diabetic). you shouldn't really have more than one soda a day (about 6-7 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 oz can). drink a lot of water instead. most normal people don't drink enough water each day, and most dancers i know don't either (and they need far more than normal people). you should eat a fairly balanced diet (eat from all your food groups, lots of veggies, fruit, and dairy). women naturally have issues with retaining calcium and with bone… [cont.]

A. This is a complex topic. Please read "Eat More, Weigh Less" by Dr. Dean Ornish. Go to the library and borrow the book. My personal choice is to avoid junk food and eat raw whole foods as much as possible. That means leafy green vegetables, other vegetables, fruits, sprouted beans, brown rice, and whole grains. Eat some vegetarian sources of oil (these are required), but don't over do it. You do not need to eat dairy or meat for a healthy diet if you eat a balanced vegetarian diet. If you do eat them, do it in limited quantities. Most degenerative diseases are from over consumption of protein and fat rich foods. A. Diets don't work they are to hard to stick to. IF you truly want to lose weight and keep it off for good there are a few things you have to do. Portion control, eat what a TRUE serving is!!! Eat about six small meals instead of three large ones, Eat more fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Cut down on your protein we as Americans eat more than our bodies truly need any way. And exercise even if you just add 15 minutes a day walking into your day you will start to lose weight, if you do all of the other things also. You don't have to stop eating what you like, You just have to eat it in the correct portions rather than what we've gotten used to. IF you do this you will lose weight, maybe not as fast as you would like but you will… [cont.]

A. Normally diets are just to maintain your already-developed body. When you are pregnant, you are growing an entire body - brain, bones, heart, blood, liver and kidneys, muscles, etc - all from scratch, from one cell. Each of these body parts need certain vitamins and minerals, as well as basic nutrients. Bones are calcium; the redi in blood is iron; also, the majority of spinal development problems (i.s. spina bifida) are preventable with appropriate doses of folic acid. Proteins, fats and carbs are the basic building blocks the body uses to grow. All these nutrient have their uses. Shortages could lead to stunted or underdeveloped children. Fortunately in the modern world, even a bad diet has a lot of good nutrients. (Pizza has cheese… [cont.]

A. Use exercises that use you own body weight (like push-up, pull ups, dips n such). If your going for a nice stomach, I've found combining leg lifts as you do a crunch is quite effective. As far as diet, stay away from high sugar intake. People become addicted to sugar and it starts in the early teens. Drink mostly water. Eat a healthy balance, and maybe talk to your parents about taking a multi-vitamin too. Cardio is important and when the motivation hits you go jogging. Start with 15mins and increase the time at your pace.

A. I go by my own rules. But I eat well. I try and eat some nuts, an apple and a banana everyday. In the summer, I eat an orange too. I eat about 5-6 little meals a day, I graze like a cow. I find this great because 1. I never over eat, 2. when I do eat "bad" foods, I can't eat as much, because my body is used to smaller amounts and 3. I like to eat and it feels like I eat lots. It can be hard because your body expects to get fed every 2 hours, so you need to learn to carry around some fruit, granola bars etc. But the best thing is to add some cardio, some walking, anything to get your heart pumping too. I just found out that you can do little things, like do as many pushup as you can 4-5 times a day, same with sit ups...it sounds so… [cont.]

A. The reason no one every really says which foods to eat is that there are hundreds of choices in each food group. And since people's tastes are different, your choices may not be the same as others. The important thing is to get the right balance in all the food groups (meaning so much carbs, veggies, etc.). Below is a link to an article that outlines what calories teens should eat and how much (in terms of portion sizes) they should get from each food group. On this page there is also a link to the food pyramid which is a great source to learn more about each food group, etc. Hope this helps

A. The only way to lose weight, get fit and stay healthy is the slow way healthy diet and regular exercise. If you rush, you fail, and you have only yourself to blame. Think long-term: don t you want to get fit and stay that way for the rest of your life? No dieting: dieting ends, healthy diet is a lifetime of good habits. A basic healthy diet: lean meats and legumes, dark veggies, whole grains, lots of water, reduce processed carbs (soda pop is Satan!) and increase fiber. Snack on fruits and veggies instead of salt and sweets. You don t have to count every calorie, but you should be aware of your overall intake.
