What kind of nutrients can be found in the skin of a cantaloupe?
Q. I know that most fruits and vegetables contain most of their nutrients in the skin. Does anybody happen to know if the skin of a cantaloupe contains any nutrients? I just ate it and it didn't taste bad. I couldn't find any info on this on the web.

A. I couldn't find much information either. I've heard people say that the rind does carry the added risk of carrying salmonella and pesticides. Because of it's strong taste and tough texture most people avoid it. I did find this site though that may be of interest to you. It's about juicing cantalope with the rind... Read down the site for info...

How do nutrients help you body with physical exercise or activity?
Q. How does a good diet help your body when it comes to lifting weights or participating in sports or individual exercise. What do nutrients do for your body in a physical aspect?
Asked by kontaguis - Wed Oct 7 12:30:17 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They provide energy source for your muscles to keep them going and be able to lift more and longer. And therefore the muscles grow and become stronger. Protein is building blocks for your muscles. They consist of protein (meat, obviously) and need it to grow. If you don't consume enough your muscles will be strong, but lean and not big.

Q. What nutrients help increase the ability to hear? Where can these nutrients be consumed in abundant or minimal amounts?
Asked by Lucifer - Thu Jul 23 23:00:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The reference website helped me a lot. I had hearing loss of 60% which after 6 months is now only a hearing loss of 25%. Worked for me hope it works for you. There are natural herbs and supplements you can take that can greatly improve and even restore your hearing. The tiny hair follicles in your inner ear can greatly improve with increased blood flow to them. You may already know that free radicals have been show to cause disease. They are highly reactive molecules that disrupt the structure of normal cellular components like the ones in your inner ear.

A. You need to basically keep their main diet a good cichlid pellet. I really like Hikari's Cichlid Gold pellet, it is a good all around cichlid food that contains everything they need to stay healthy. I have just ordered another pellet food from Hikari called Bio-Gold, it is supposed to be very good for South American cichlids. Flowerhorns are hybrid cichlids, but the species they come from are all South and Central American cichlids, so as long as you keep the diet the same as it would be for any other SA or CA cichlid you should be fine. No food will help the hump get larger on the Flowerhorn, this is a genetic trait, feeding it a specific food will do nothing to the hump that will not happen naturally. MFK

What is the proper way to provide nutrients to my plants, growing hydroponically?
Q. on the bottle it says how much to use per gallon so how do i know when its been used up and when do i have to add more nutrients, i have seen some people wait until the reservior empties to half then they flush and refill then add more nutrients, what do you think?
Asked by lenny - Mon Jan 15 10:51:59 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Plants absorb nutrients through capillary action at the rate of concentration of the available nutrient. They absorb the fluid then extract the nutrient, they do not extract the nutrient from the free floating fluid. That is why there is a recommended concentration. The flushing of the reservoir is to remove settled solids and other impurities so as not to change the concentration of the newly added solution. What you have observed is the recommended procedure for small non commercial hydroponics.

Do you lose food nutrients when you bake healthy fruits veggies into bread?
Q. I have been baking various whole grain breads with pumpkin, cherry, plum, butternut squash purees. I was hoping I wasn't losing the nutrients of the purees.
Asked by YesIDid - Mon Mar 10 14:02:10 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. cooking anything makes it lose nutrients, yet sometimes it makes other nutrients more available for our body to utilize. But applying heat makes the food lose nutrients. I should stress the fine point that lost nutrients through cooking does not necessarily mean less nutritious. Take corn, lots of niacin, but none in a form the human body can use. Cook it with wood ash, and voila! a niacin source. This form of corn is called hominy. Oh yeah, and next time you are at the store, check the lable on a can of regular corn. It tells you that there is so much niacin (vit. B6) in it. But the FDA, USDA allow the false labling. Sure its in there, but we poop it out.

A. In the stomach is where the food gets broken down by the acids. The nutrients then pass into the intestines where the intestinal wall transfers them into the blood and then onto the cells.

What are the special food/nutrients that vegetarians need in their diet?
Q. Vegetarians need a special diet in order to keep healthy as they do not eat meat and many things found in meat are not easily available to them. What sort of special foods provide these nutrients for them?
Asked by Emily - Thu Jun 5 08:12:37 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Special foods? None. Vegetarians have the same nutritional requirements as "regular" people do except that they don't get it from meat. As for protein, people only need a few grams (or milligrams, I forget the exact amount)per day depending on activity. A regular serving of nuts or legumes should take care of the protein "problem" On the contrary, getting hold of food other than meat is not a problem, at least in the US and the west. In fact, even unseasonal foods are becoming more and more available year round.

A. Try nutritional supplements ! Ensure Plus/ Boost Plus My doctor reccended them for a healthier weight gain- they consume abunch of essential nutrients/ minerals and nutrients along with a protein and calcium benefit. Consume "TWO" 235mL bottles per day. - They come in quite a variaty of great flavours (personally I think Ensure has more variaty and is my preffered choice) The chocolate flavours taste great heated in a mug- like hot chocolate. And the other flavours taste best chilled. Try consuming more dense food's too- but don't take anything out of what you normally eat when adding Ensure Plus/ Boost Plus. - Wholewheat pastas (with cream/ pesto sauce, added cheese/ extra vegetables and lean protein- soy/ turkey meatballs, lean ground… [cont.]

Asked by Jave - Fri May 8 10:11:45 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You make the mistake of believing that people from a time before our own did not use a scientific approach to things. . The study of crop nutrition began thousands of years ago. Ancient history tells us that various experiments were undertaken by Theophrastus (372-287 B.C.), while several writings of Dioscorides on botany dating from the first century A.D., are still in existence. So people were well aware of what sort of nutrients were needed to produce crops and flowers. The beginnings of hydroponics can be traced to Ancient China, Egypt, and India. King Nebuchadnezzar II built the hanging gardens of Babylon as early as 600 B.C. These gardens, famous as one of the Seven Wonders, were filled with plants grown in a steady stream of… [cont.]

Q. My 15 month old son only gets my milk before bed and in the morning and if he's teething during the night a couple times. So if I were to get pregnant would I need much more nutrients than normal when pregnant? I asked my doctor but she didn't seem to know for sure!
Asked by #3DueFeb - Tue Oct 23 16:32:43 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Probably not as much as you would think. Extra calories are the most important. However there is evidence that it isn't like you take what you normally need + breastfeeding requirements + pregnancy requirements. For example when you are pregnant you commonly loose some bone density no matter how much calcium you eat, however if you are pregnant and breastfeeding bone density generally continues to increase. Our bodies can use available nutrients more efficiently then they generally do. One of the reasons pregnant women tend to be constipated is that the digestive tract slows down to allow more nutrients and water to be removed from the food we eat. However there have been very few studies on breastfeeding during pregnancy, so the… [cont.]

A. It is absolutely impossible to get a vitamin or mineral deficiently in just a three week period. Greeny leafy vegetables kale, spinach, chard etc...contain iron. Carrots are exceptionally good for you but hard to chew on. I get round this by having juice instead. I have consumed 2 kilos worth of carrots today, by making and drinking 2 litres of fresh raw carrot juice. Use the vegetables to make home-made soup. Very filling and nourishing. Very basic, put cut up vegetables into pot, add water (or vegetable stock) season with herbs, boil until veggies soft. Remove from heat and mash or put through blender. During this weight-loss period, avoid all fizzy sodas, alcohol, caffeine, shop-brought juices and sports drinks. Also avoid… [cont.]

What kinds of nutrients does Rhizopus stolonifer(bread mold) need to grow?
Q. Hi! I'm doing a science project on growing Rhizopus Stolonifer. I was wondering what kinds of nutrients does Rhizopus stolonifer(bread mold) need to grow, and what amounts. I was planning on placing different types of bread on the counter and observing the mold. To make my hypothesis on what bread would be the moldiest, I was going to analyze the ingredients on the package, and see how many of the ingredients were prime things for mold growth. Any help would be great! Thanks so much for your time!

A. Bread molds can grow on the breads, that means they can suck up the nutrition from the carbohydrate compounds of the bread. You should be careful when you have a problem with this mold invasion.
