A pyramid (from Greek "πυραμίς" - pyramis) is a structure where the outer surfaces are triangular and converge at a point. The base of a pyramid can be trilateral, quadrilateral, or any polygon shape, meaning that a pyramid has at least three triangular surfaces (at least four faces including the base). The square pyramid, with square base and four triangular outer surfaces, is a common version. A pyramid's design, with the majority of the weight closer to the ground, means that less material higher up on the pyramid will be pushing down from above: this distribution of weight allowed early civilizations to create stable monumental structures. For thousands of years, the largest structures on earth were pyramids: first the Red Pyramid in the Dashur Necropolis and then the Great Pyramid of Khufu, both of Egypt, the latter the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still remaining. It is still the tallest pyramid. The largest pyramid in the world ever built, by volume, is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, in the Mexican state of Puebla. This pyramid is still being excavated. Asked by jasmine s - Tue May 5 12:08:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The perpendicular height is the height of the apex above the base. The slant height is the height measured along a triangular face, from the middle of a base-edge up to the apex. It is the perpendicular height of that triangle, and is needed if the area of one triangular face is to be found = one-half of base-edge x slant height. To find the height of a pyramis when given the slant height: 1. The height, the slant height and half the side make a right triangle . 2. Using the Pythagorean theorem we can calculate the height of the pyramid. This triangle comes from connecting the line of the height to the line of the slant height along the base. The base of this triangle is equal to half of a base side. Answered by Sarah - Tue May 5 13:35:11 2009 What are the differences and similarities of a cone and a pyramid? Q. Any answer is greatly appreciated because my nephew has to turn in the assignment tomorrow. Asked by brian 2010 - Tue Feb 10 19:21:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. The similarities would be is that they both have a base which extends into a single vertex. The difference would be that a cone only has 1 edge and a pyramid has a minimum of 6.
